Mortice has been supplying locks and keys to the trade customer market for over 180 years. Producing, manufacturing and supplying a large variety of key types, Mortice has become a brand well-known for its high-quality products. The main identifying feature of a mortice key or lock is the size and shape. The locks are wider and thicker than most other brands which add to their durability, security and quality and the keys are of a larger gauge therefore making them less likely to snap.
Mortice or Chubb locks (commonly named as chub locks are a main manufacturer and supplier) come in a range of styles. However, the most common two are cylinder locks and lever locks.
A Lever Lock is the most common type of lock which operates by inserting a large key that makes contact with the internal tumbler and turns it to a position that allows the lock bolt to slide past. This then allows you to rotate the key and unlock the door. Lever Locks are available in three and five lever varieties and the more levers a lock has, the more different possible key shapes there are, therefore making the lock more secure. These locks are often used on exterior doors such as garages and entrance doors.
A Cylinder Lock is a commonly used lock that is primarily designed to be used on internal doors. These locks operate by having a row of internal pins of different lengths which then lines up with the correct cylinder key, allowing the door to open. The more internal pins a cylinder lock has, the more secure the lock is. Cylinder keys have a smaller gauge than mortice keys.
